Porters Five Forces Analysis of Dell Introduction Dell is a computer hardware firm that offers â€Å"a broad range of product categories, including mobility products, desktop PCs, software and peripherals, servers and networking, services, and storage† (Annual Report 2008). 61 percent of these products are PCs. Dells business strategy focuses on direct relationships with customers, improving competitiveness by reducing overall costs, and reaching more customers worldwide through new distribution partners (Annual Report 2009). According to Gartner, Dell holds 3rd largest global personal computers (PC) market share of 12.8 percent in the 3rd Quarter of 2009. The PC industry is one of the fastest growing industries in the world, with a 6.6% growth in 2008, reaching a value of US$203.7 billion (Data monitor 2009). The competition in the industry is moderate (see figure 3). Factors contributing this statement will be explained using Porters Five Forces. Supplier Power There is a strong supplier power. Component parts of a PC are relatively homogenous and standardized in nature, with fragmented suppliers (Sun Microsystems, NVIDIA, Hynix, etc), and they do not focus on product differentiation. PC manufacturers have many substitutes to choose from. However, there is a concentrated amount of supplier in terms of CPU and Operating Systems (OS) software. Intel dominates the manufacturing of processors (CPU), with 80.6 percent market share in the processor market, while AMD only has 11.5 percent (theinquirer.net September 2009). Intel has a strong brand which could be a significant bargaining chip with PC producers. Similarly, Microsoft dominates the operating system market (90% market share). The industrys reliance on these two major suppliers inevitably triggers PC manufacturers to establish good relationships with these corporations, while some attempt to diversify its risks by increasing the number of AMD and other OS ran PCs. Dells launch of the Ide aStorm website (see Financial Times) to find out customers preference for Linus operated PCs was a strategic attempt to begin diversifying its risks. Buyer Power There is a moderately-strong buyer power. Although buyers are fragmented (many, different), there is a significantly low expected switching cost given that the product specifications are relatively homogenous. With that, it leads to a low product satisfaction-loyalty relationship (Matos, Henrique, Rosa, 2009), thus although customers first satisfying experiences with the one PC does not assure the relevant PC manufacturer their repurchase intentions. There is certain degree of product differentiation nonetheless, in terms of style and design, and high brand awareness might create a certain level of brand loyalty, but most buyers are more interested in quality, product specifications and costs. There are some exceptions of course; Apple computers which use Macintosh operating system (OS) have high switching costs due to the vast differences between Microsoft and Macintosh OS. In this case, Dell should compete in terms of lowering production costs, and increase brand loyalty not throu gh product specifications but servicing quality. E-commerce which eliminates retail costs (see Kumar Craig, 2007), and on-site servicing are good strategic methods Dell has focused on and should continue. Barriers to Entry Barrier to entry is moderately-strong. Existing industrial players have strong brands and hold many patent rights. To enter the market, entrants are required to invest on RD or the purchase of patent rights, which is often expensive. Existing industrial players are large and possess high internal economies of scale. Dell and HP have various departments specializing in different aspects; marketing, product innovation, servicing, etc. They are able to distribute their fixed costs, as well as managerial costs to a larger output, giving them significant cost advantages. Existing bulk purchase agreements have already been established with key suppliers, such as Microsofts agreement with Dell to install its OS in production factories. Potential entrants will face challenges in gaining supplier confidence in both production as well as credit issues. Threats of Substitutes There is a moderately-weak threat of substitution given that the functionality of a PC is irreplaceable. Other electronic gadgets are often complementary to that of PC. For example, an mp3 player or a camera requires plug-ins with a computer to do file transfers. However, threats lies among the youth customers who are more attracted to the next generation game consoles such as Wii, PS3 or Xbox. Although the threats of substitutes are moderately-weak in general, targeting the youth market is crucial for long term profits as customer loyalty would be established at an early stage. Dells acquisition of Alienware, a high-performance gaming PC manufacturer, in 2006 (NY times) was indeed a strategic move. More focus should be placed in expanding Alienwares brand value equivalent to that of Dell. Degree of Rivalry The degree of rivalry is moderate. In the past, â€Å"Michael [Dell] has been absolutely brilliant at getting the industry to compete on his best basis for competition-price, delivery, and the ability to configure to order. But now the others can differentiate in ways that matter to the customers† (Kirkpatrick, 2000). Such differentiation includes establishing a brand identity among customers, personalizing customers respective PCs in terms of specifications, colors and designs, and the ability to innovate at a rapid pace to achieve short term competitive advantage (Lawless Anderson, 1996) since an innovative new product tends to face low competition at the point of introduction before it is imitated (Roberts, 1999). Coupled with a high Concentration Ration of 57%, it decreases the level of rivalry. However, the homogeneity of the CPU from Intel and its monopolized Microsoft OS (except Macintosh) creates low switching costs for customers, which increases the cross price-elast icity of demand of the products, thus increasing rivalry. Still, the relatively strong growth, in addition to the successful introduction of the Netbook, means that firms could expand without the expense of its competitors. It is bad news to Dell as it specializes in production efficiency, not so much in product innovation. Its organizational culture might not be ready for a switch to innovative-led production. Outsourcing its RD department might provide a new solution to the firm, while developing its own simultaneously. Financial Times 29 October 2009: Technology How laptops took over the world. It is not constituted by individual sounds but by their accurately measure the performance of its members and use it objectively to optimize them as vital resources. The performance of an employee is his resultant behavior on task which can be bserved and evaluated. It refers to the contribution made by an individual in the accomplishment of organizational objectives. Performance can be measured by combining quantity, quality, time and cost. People do not learn unless they are given feedback on the results of their actions. For learning to take place, feedback should be provided regularly and it should register both successes and failures. It should also follow soon after the relevant action or actions. Performance appraisal system provides management an opportunity to recall as well as give feedback to people. This feedback is pertaining the performance of the worker. This helps them to correct their mistakes and acquire new skills. Performance appraisal (PA) refers to all those procedures that are used to evaluate the personality, the performance and the potential of its group members. Evaluation is different from Judgment. The former is concerned with performance and the latter is concerned with the individual. While evaluation deals with achievement of goals, a Judgment has an undercurrent of personal attack and is likely to evoke resistance. Performance appraisal could be informal or formal. Informal performance appraisal is a continuous process of feeding back information o the subordinates about how well they are doing their work in the organization. The informal appraisal is conducted on a day-today basis. For example, the manager spontaneously mentions that a particular piece of work was well performed or poorly performed. It is due to the close connection between the behavior and the feedback on it, the informal appraisal quickly encourages desirable performance and discourages undesirable performance before it becomes permanently ingrained. Therefore, informal appraisal should not be perceived merely as a casual occurrence but as an important activity and an integral part of the organization’s culture. The formal performance appraisal occurs usually annually on formal basis and involves appraise and appraiser in finding answers to the following questions: 1 . What performance level has to be achieved during the period? 2. Has it been achieved? 3. What has been the shortfall and constraints? 4. What are we going to do now? 5. How will we know that we have done it? 6. What kind of feedback can be expected? 7. What assistance can be expected to improve performance? 8. What rewards and opportunities are likely to follow from the performance appraisal? When the employees have this type of information, they are aware of the following pecifications:- 2. What assistance is available? 3. What can they expect when the required level of performance is achieved? This increases employee acceptance of the appraisal process and results in the trust that the employee has in the organization. An environment that affords an opportunity for further growth while minimizing stressful situations certainly enhances appraisal acceptance. Establishing this type of environment goes far beyond the performance appraisal process. Every aspect of managing people and their work relates to the improvement of their quality of work life. Performance appraisal is an integral part of trusting, healthy and happy work environment that goes a long way in promoting the same. Performance appraisal has been used for the following three purposes: Remedial Maintenance Development A performance appraisal needs to cover all these three purposes with the same focus. If any purpose predominates, the system becomes out of balance. For instance, if remedial purpose is foremost, then the performance appraisal may become a disciplinary tool, a form of a charge sheet and a tool of power instead of instrument of evaluation.

When it comes to things we see, as humans we cannot help judge based on the appearance. Some people have baseless opinions on how a certain person should look rather than gaining an understanding of the individual as a whole. What we believe and want to believe in regards to friends, family, and even co-workers is something that all people deal with on a regular. We have an idea or a belief of what a person is and who they actually are, but how do we really know? How can an individual say that the person that we say we know is who they say they actually are? In truth, you don’t know. To you and me they could be exactly who they say they are, but in their own minds they may think they are someone else. They may live a lifestyle that a person who knows the individual never knew that they had. This is what it means to have an alternative identity and or lifestyle. When an individual has an alternative lifestyle, they live double life. For example, a man is married to a woman and has three kids with this very same woman, but takes monthly vacations or â€Å"work related vacations† to spend time with his girlfriend in another state. In the TV show â€Å"Dexter† and film, â€Å"Mr. Brooks†, both individuals had secret lives. They chose to keep their lives secret mainly because both lives that they had, but they know that both lives could not coexist with one another. Both characters had real lives other than the life of a killer. Mr. Brooks has a successful business and Dexter is a very successful crime scene investigator. Even with such accolades, it would appear that what they are satisfied with their lives, but they are not. In most cases, a person may choose to have an alternate life due to lack of satisfaction of their current lives. In a statement above, there was an example used that described a married man with children choosing to take time to spend with his girlfriend from another state. In a situation like this, even though that man is married with children, he may not be receiving the satisfaction from his relationship with his immediate family. Like this individual, both Dexter and Mr. Brooks may be dealing with a similar situation in which their immediate lives are not providing the satisfaction that they desire. Mr. Brooks is a successful business man but does not get the joy and satisfaction that he receives from murdering that he in his company. Dexter is a successful crime scene investigator, but even though he enjoys his job he receive nowhere near the satisfaction that he receives when killing a bad individual. The reason behind living multiple lifestyles is an attempt by an individual to receive the satisfaction that they desire that they can’t receive in their other life. One of the more recent real life situations America has faced in which a person sought out to kill others was the, â€Å"Navy Yard Shooter†. His name was Aaron Alexis. This was an individual who murdered 12 people at Washingtons Navy Yard. One of the reasons why this situation is still confusing to many people is because there was no clear motive of why he murdered those twelve individuals. According to a senior law enforcement official, ‘Co-workers have portrayed Alexis of having lived the mundane work life of a well-paid tech contractor given daily per diems that allowed a comfortable stay in an expensive city† (Pearson, 2013). Another person close to him described Alexis as very polite and a very friendly man. This individual is a friend and former housemate, Kristi Suthamtewakul. She noticed some personality changes in Alexis over the last few months, but she stated that it was nothing indicating potential violence. She noticed that he had been frustrated about pay and benefits issues after a one-month contracting stint in Japan last year. She also stated that, Thats when I first started hearing statements about how he wanted to move out of America,† and that, He was very frustrated with the government and how, as a veteran, he didnt feel like he was getting treated right or fairly† (Pearson, 2013). Some will say why would something as insignificant as that lead someone to kill others? There is a reason why a person would not want individuals to know exactly who they are. The reasons for which these individuals may not want to be known can vary. A person may want to be known. There is a possibility that a killer may not want to be known to others. That individual may not want to be known because they enjoy what they do. Both Dexter and Mr. Brooks hide their true identities mainly because they had individuals whom they loved and cared for in their normal life. Dexter had a sister and Mr. Brooks had a wife and a daughter. At the same time both Dexter and Mr. Brooks both have a desire and passion to kill others. Both have their different motives for why they kill but the both have a distinct passion to kill others. There may also be a possibility that along with killing others, they may also want to protect those individuals from being a potential target. The true identity of a killer solely depends on the motive of the killer. Regardless if a killer chooses to be known or not, the true identity of someone who kills and kills others frequently is that they are a serial killer. This is the main reason why an individual should never judge someone based on what they appear to be. The true identity of someone is the identity at which that person feels the most comfortable to be themselves. In the case of Dexter and Mr. Brooks, they both feel more like themselves when they kill others. When you see some people, you want to think that you know exactly what type of person they are by just looking at them.
